EGGS,EGGS,EGGS

Today I'm going to tell you about eggs! The best thing about having chickens is that you get to collect their eggs. Every day my chickens lay up to 5 to 10 eggs, that about 1 egg every 2 days per chicken. When they are really happy, each chickens can lay an egg everyday. The bad thing about it is I have to clean the eggs one at a time. The silkies lay little eggs and the red hens lay big eggs. Once cutie pie laid an egg that was so small it was the size of a gobstopper.

  1. First I clean them in hot water do get rid of any dirt or hay from the shells
  2. Next I fill a bowl with cold water
  3. I place an eggs one at a time in the bowl
  4. If it floats it means the egg is rotten
  5. If it sinks to the bottom it means its yum yum and ready to eat
These are my eggs ready in the carton. This is about 3-4 days worth. My family can't
eat that so many eggs so we sometimes sell them to our neighbours. The neighbours call me the "EGGSPERT" .. Ha ha ........
This is me cooking my famous scrambled eggs for breakfast!!!. They are sooo delicious..

Sometimes when we leave the windows open in our car Bok Bok sneakily jumps through the window into the front seats and waits for us to get into the car to drive away. I think she is trying to hitch hike into town. What a silly chicken...

NAMING MY CHICKENS

This is me cuddling one of my chickens. Her name is porridge. I called her that because I like eating warm porridge on cold mornings.
These are my five silkies. Their names are Snow, Silver, Pearl, Cutie Pie and last but not least Jaffa. Snow is my favorite, and Luxe's is Cutie Pie. Silkies have very fluffy heads and feathers on their feet. Everyone who comes to visit us thinks they look really funny...

The big white hanging bucket is their grains, and the small red one is filled with water. It is my job to fill them up every second day. It's very important to keep it fresh.
These are my five red laying hens and One special wine dot. Their names are Winter, Precious, Julia, Porridge, Bok Bok and Magic black and white one).
This is Penny she is always clucky and is the Mother Hen of the whole tribe.
Penny is currently losing her feathers which is called malting. She does this coming into every winter.

Building the Taj cikan

Hello world!!!!

My name is Mink Amalie. A few years ago my grandpa came to my house in Byron Bay to help me and my family build a pen for our chickens. Because my Dad is an awesome architect, he designed me the best chicken pen in the world, by far....

We used snake proof wire to keep out the snakes and rats, timber to frame it up, plastic cells that look cool and provide shade, corrugated iron roofing to provide shelter, metal hollow section for the doors, and concrete blocks to enclose the base so that the foxes cant dig underneath..

This is a photo of Grandpa Robin at the official opening of the pen which we called the TAJ CIKAN. This name comes from its reference to the architectural masterpiece in India called the Taj Mahal which is a palace of the kings....Grandpa's best friend Uncle Tony made us a sign for the finishing touches which we mounted on the pen.

The Taj Cikan is home to 12 chickens at present. We have 5 Silkies (Bantams), 2 wine dots and 5 red laying hens. All  my chickens have names that were given to them by me and my sister Lucky. my chickens are the luckiest girls in the world to have a designer home like the taj cikan.
